Here's where to look for the records most people ask about in Los Angeles County:
- Court case files: see criminal court case records, or contact the clerk of the court that heard the case
- Criminal records and rap sheets: contact the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Criminal Information and Analysis
- Arrest, booking, and jail records: contact the Los Angeles County sheriff's records unit
- Official background checks: order through the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Criminal Information and Analysis
- Police reports and incident records: contact the agency that wrote the report
- Expungement and record sealing: file with the court that heard the case
For LASD records, contact the Records and Identification Bureau at (562) 345-4441. Questions may also go to (562) 345-4426 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; records and report requests use (562) 345-4470. Court files and certified copies come from Los Angeles Superior Court. Its central criminal courthouse is the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, 210 W. Temple Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
